Egyptian opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei has been placed under house arrest, Egyptian security sources confirmed Friday, dpa reported.

ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, returned to Egypt Thursday to participate in ongoing anti-government demonstrations.

On Friday, after he attended services in a mosque, he was initially barred from leaving the house of worship. Subsequently, security forces took him to his home and told him he would be detained there. No time frame was given.

ElBaradei has indicated he would help run a transitional government should President Hosny Mubarak step down. He visited Egypt last year to test the waters for a potential presidential campaign.
