Egyptian military warned Sunday against any sit-ins or marches that impeded the referendum for the constitutional amendments next Saturday, Xinhua reported.

"We must provide suitable environment to execute the referendum process in a civilized democratic manner," a military source was quoted by official MENA news agency as saying.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which took power for a transitional period after the resignation of former President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11, said next Saturday will be an official holiday for all sectors, universities and schools in the country.

Some opposition parties, such as Tagammu and Wafd, have said they rejected the amendments and called on the formulation of a new constitution.

The referendum has been scheduled to be held from 8 a.m. and to 7 p.m. on March 19.

The amendments were proposed on articles about presidential candidacy and terms, judicial monitoring on elections, membership of the People's Assembly and so on.

According to the changes, the presidential term will be reduced to four years as compared with current six years, and there will be a two-term cap on the presidency. The president should appoint one or more vice presidents within 60 days after taking office.

The referendum will decide whether to cancel article 179 concerning the president's right to refer any terrorism crime to any concerned jurisdiction body stipulated in the constitution.

Article 189 concerning the mechanism of amending the constitution will also be subject to the referendum.

Egyptian citizens aged 18 or above can participate in the referendum.
