Syria Wednesday dropped its contested bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council, caving in to international pressure after its lethal two-month military crackdown on reform protestors, dpa reported.
Syrian UN envoy Bashar Jaafari said his delegation and Kuwaits delegation had informed the countries in the so-called Asian group that the two countries will swap the order in which they bid for membership on the council, Voice of America reported.
Kuwait will run for the 2011 to 2013 term and Syria will run for the 2014 to 2016 term.
If Syria had not stepped back, it would have automatically been elected to the council since it had no challengers for the nomination.
