An Egyptian policeman was killed and two others were injured Wednesday in an attack in the Sinai Peninsula, the second in the area in less than a month, said a security source.

The attack was carried out by masked gunmen against a security checkpoint in the border town of Rafah, DPA reported.

According to state television, the attackers fired a rocket-propelled grenade on the checkpoint.

"It is not clear yet who stands behind the attack," the source told dpa on condition of anonymity.

Two Egyptian policemen were killed in Sinai in mid-April when unknown gunmen attacked another security checkpoint near the airport of the city of Al-Arish.

Egypt has been gripped by turmoil and soaring crime rates since the ouster of Hosny Mubarak in a popular revolt in February 2011.
