( dpa ) - The German government Monday repeated its condemnation of the targeting of Israeli territory by missiles launched from the Gaza Strip.

"We have made very clear that in particular the missiles from the Gaza Strip must come to an end," Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger said.

"It cannot be allowed that the lives of the people in Israel are continually threatened in a terrorist fashion from Gaza," Jaeger said.

He cast doubts on the reports from the Palestinian side of a blockade of the Gaza Strip and suggested the severity of the electricity and fuel crisis could have been exaggerated by the Hamas leadership.

The de facto Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip warned Monday of a "catastrophe" if Israel did not end its blockade.

Gaza's only power plant, which operates on industrial diesel, shut down Sunday evening, leaving large parts of the strip in darkness and without power.

Israel has accused Hamas of exaggerating the humanitarian situation in Gaza for "propaganda" purposes.
