( dpa )- An explosion rocked Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, leaving scores of victims among dead and wounded, a government spokesman said.
"There was an explosion in Kandahar city this morning at 10:00am, that killed dozens and wounded dozens more," Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said. "We can't give an exact number, but the number is very high."
A witness in Kandahar said that it was a suicide attack that killed more than 50 people including a famous former commander.
Bashary could not confirm whether it was a suicide attack or a remote-controlled explosion.
Kandahar province is the birth place of the Taliban militants, who are still entrenched in the province six years after being ousted from power by a US-led military invasion.
