(dpa) - King Juan Carlos inaugurated Socialist party leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero as the country's prime minister, a day after Zapatero's confirmation in parliament.

In a ceremony which also saw Queen Sofia in attendance, Zapatero took the oath of office. Later in the day, the 47-year-old second- time prime minister will present his cabinet.

Zapatero's will govern with a simple majority, with the support of smaller parties on a case-by-case basis. He was reconfirmed only with the votes of 169 Socialist legislators in a second round of voting in the 350-member parliament.
