Atletico Madrid still fourth despite draw in Valladolid

( dpa ) - Atletico Madrid are still fourth in the Spanish Liga on Sunday despite Sunday's disappointing 1-1 draw up in Valladolid.

Atletico seemed to be on the way to victory after Maxi Rodriguez gave them the lead in the 69th minute, putting away the rebound after a shot from Diego Forlan had been saved.

But Valladolid pressed strongly towards the end and Bartholomew Ogbeche took advantage of defensive hesitation to make it 1- 1 in stoppage time.

"We have thrown away two points today," moaned Atletico winger Simao Sabrosa.

The draw leaves Atletico with 54 points from 32 games, just one point above fifth-placed Racing Santander, who won 2-1 away to crisis club Valencia on Saturday.

Santander - who have never qualified for Europe - are two points ahead of sixth-placed Sevilla, who won 3-1 away to Mallorca with goals from Renato, Frederic Kanoute and Daniel Alves.

A team whose Euro hopes have gone up in smoke recently is Espanyol, who crashed 0-1 at home to lowly Osasuna on Sunday. The latest defeat leaves Espanyol in seventh place, no less than six points behind Sevilla.

The win in Barcelona leaves Osasuna seventh from bottom, out of danger for the time being.

Valencia are sixth from bottom, tied on 39 points with Valladolid.

Fourth from bottom are Recreativo Huelva, who forced a 2-2 draw at home to Barcelona on Sunday.

Zaragoza are still third from bottom, on 34 points, after a 0-0 draw away to Getafe.

Murcia - who are away to runaway leaders Real Madrid later on Sunday - are second from bottom on 30, whilst doomed Levante remain rock bottom on 22 despite a surprise 1-0 win away to Betis.
