A Ugandan peacekeeper has been found shot dead in Sudan's crisis-torn Darfur region, a spokesman for the joint UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said in Khartoum on Thursday, dpa reported.

The police officer's body was discovered on Wednesday in his car in the El Fasher region of northern Darfur, the spokesman said. He had been shot several times.

The spokesman said an investigation had been launched to determine who shot the officer, the first to be killed since UNMAID peacekeepers arrived in Darfur in January.

So far only 9,000 of the pledged 26,000-strong-force has taken up duty, prompting the United Nations to warn the Darfur operation is seriously undermanned.

Lawlessness prevails in the region where UN officials say up to 300,000 people have been killed 2.5 million made homeless by five years of conflict between Arab militias and the black population.
