(dpa) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama plans to spend some 20 million dollars on a nationwide campaign to gain the support of Hispanic voters, his campaign announced Tuesday.

The money will serve to register and "mobilize" eligible Latino voters through television advertisements, internet outreach and visits by members of Congress to key constituencies around the country, the Obama campaign said.

The growing US Hispanic community could have a significant impact on the White House race this year, especially in some key battleground states that include Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Florida.

An opinion poll last week showed that Obama is preferred by a nearly 3-1 margin over his Republican rival John McCain by Hispanic voters in the United States.

Obama beats McCain by 66 per cent to 23 per cent among registered Hispanic voters nationwide, the Pew Hispanic Center said. dpa ge cc aw
