Aito Garcia Reneses has resigned as coach of Spain's basketball team, which won the silver medal in the Beijing Olympics, the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) confirmed Tuesday, dpa reported.

Garcia Reneses is reportedly set to join Unicaja Malaga, after he unilaterally left the national team.

He had reached an agreement to coach Unicaja before he signed with the FEB to lead world-champion Spain in the Olympics. Unicaja accepted a deferral in the signing of the contract until after the Games, so as not to violate a rule that prevents a club coach from simultaneously coaching the national team.

FEB president Jose Luis Saez sacked Pepu Hernandez - who led Spain to the World Championship title and to the position of runner-up in the European Championship - in June, in a surprising move that forced him to look for an alternative in a hurry.

Garcia Reneses accepted the offer to coach Spain in Beijing, but retained the option to leave the position after the Games.

"I do not just want to coach two months a year, and right now I would rather remain active throughout the season," Garcia Reneses said.
