Dan Gosling struck a 118th-minute winner as Everton beat Liverpool 1-0 to oust them from the FA Cup, dpa reported.

A game with little goalmouth action had seemed to be heading inexorably for penalties when a cross from Andy van der Meyde fell for the substitute.

Gosling jinked past Alvaro Arbeloa and squeezed a shot into the far corner.

Liverpool's night of woe had begun in the 16th minute when captain Steve Gerrard limped off with a hamstring injury.

The game never really settled into any kind of pattern and was characterized by yellow cards and misplaced passes.

When Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva was dismissed with 15 minutes remaining, after collecting a second yellow card for hacking down Joleon Lescott, the only surprise was that it hadn't happened sooner.

Not until the 71st minute was there any kind of chance, but when it came it was a good one.

A superb flowing move ended with Tim Cahill laying the ball off to Leon Osman, who crashed an angled shot against the post.

Osman had the second chance of the game as well, drawing a decent low save from Pepe Reina six minutes into extra-time.

The Spanish goalkeeper then recovered quickly to deny Gosling on the follow-up. The 19-year-old, though, would have his moment of glory.

Everton are at home to Aston Villa in the fifth round after Martin O'Neill's side saw off Doncaster Rovers 3-1.

Steve Sidwell followed in the rebound after a Craig Gardner shot had been blocked to give Villa a 15th-minute lead, and John Carew doubled that advantage with a deflected shot four minutes later.

Jason Price pulled one back for Doncaster on the stroke of half- time, but teenager Nathan Delfouneso made the game safe just after the hour.

Benni McCarthy headed the winner for Blackburn Rovers against Sunderland one minute from the end of extra-time.

David Healy had given Sunderland an early lead, but Aaron Mokoena levelled before the South African made it 2-1.

Blackburn are home to Coventry City in the fifth round.

Derby County came from 2-0 down to beat their East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest 3-2.

A Chris Cohen strike and a penalty from Nathan Tyson had Forest seemingly cruising within 14 minutes, but Rob Hulse pulled one back after 27 minutes, and second-half goals from Paul Green and the former Forest player Kris Commons won the game for Nigel Clough's side.

They will face Manchester United in the fifth round.
