Syria could hand over to the Lebanese authority in June information on Lebanese soldiers and civilians who went missing during the battle between the Lebanese and Syrian armies on Oct. 13, 1990, local Central News Agency (CNA) reported Saturday, Xinhua reported.
The Syrian army carried out a military operation on Oct. 13, 1990 against the presidential palace in Lebanon to oust Gen. Michel Aoun who was prime minister at that time, units from the Lebanese army clashed with the Syrian army, losing many soldiers who were either dead of taken by the Syrian army.
Judicial sources from the Syrian-Lebanese committee tasked with following up the issue of missing Lebanese in Syria met Saturday in Jdeidet Yabous on the Syrian side of the Lebanese-Syrian borders and discussed the fate of Lebanese soldiers who went missing.
After over 19 years of Lebanon's request to get information on the detainees, the CNA said the Syrian side could give Lebanon information about the missing people during the committee's meeting in June.
The Syrian side was informed about all Syrians missing in Lebanon, which turned out they had died in accidents not related to political events, the source said.
The upcoming meeting in June will tackle the issue of Lebanese soldiers and civilians who are in Syrian jails, and ways to have them return to Lebanon, the source added.
