Greens leader asks Australian troops to withdraw from Afghanistan

Corruption in the recent Afghan presidential elections makes the work of Australian troops even more dangerous and they should be brought home, Australian Greens leader Bob Brown told reporters on Thursday.

Brown said there needed to be a parliamentary debate about the human and financial cost of having troops in Afghanistan, especially following the manipulation of the election by the regime of President Hamid Karzai, Xinhua reported.

"The outcome of that corruption ... will be a more dangerous and difficult job for Australian troops," he said.

Brown said the elections had been disastrous because of that corruption.

"And that means disastrous for Australian troops, their safety and their well-being," he said.

"The Greens position is that the Australian troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan. We certainly should not be contemplating or conceding any further troops going to Afghanistan in the near future."
