A passenger train slammed into a school bus in Pakistan's Punjab province on Wednesday, killing eight children and the bus driver, police said, DPA reported.

The accident occurred at an ungated railway crossing near the town of Mian Channu, located 250 kilometers south-west of Punjab's capital, Lahore.

Police officer Malik Mureed Abbas said at least 12 children were injured in the collision, which took place early morning when dense fog had reduced visibility.

There were no casualties on the Jafar Express passenger train.

Abbas said a railway employee responsible for stopping road traffic during train crossings was absent from work Wednesday.

Pakistan's railroad network runs through main cities and towns, with several ground-level crossings that are not gated or manned.
