South African anti-apartheid hero and former president Nelson Mandela will be celebrating his 92nd birthday privately with his family, his grandson disclosed Tuesday, dpa reported.
Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela said that while staying at home in Johannesburg next Sunday, Mandela would receive a birthday tribute visit by 95 children from his birthplace Mvezo and in the town he grew up, Qunu.
The public last saw the ageing leader, whose health is failing and who rarely appears in public, at the World Cup closing festivities at Soccer City Stadium on Sunday.
To mark the birthday of the Nobel Peace Prize recipient, the United Nations has declared July 18 as "Nelson Mandela Day."
