Latvia to host military drills involving NATO aviation

Two-day military exercises involving NATO fighter jets will begin on Tuesday at the Adazi training around outside Riga, the mixnews.lv website has said, quoting NATO Air Force officer Miroslav Svoboda.

According to the website, the drills will involve servicemen intended to join the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, RIA Novosti reported.

Svoboda did not specify how many soldiers and fighter jets will be involved.

The ISAF currently has some 130,000 troops in Afghanistan. In line with U.S. President Barack Obama's Afghan strategy, an additional 30,000 U.S. soldiers were to be sent to the war-torn country in the first part on 2010 to defeat Taliban and establish law and order. Other NATO members have also pledged to send 7,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.

Latvia has sent a total of 160 soldiers to the southern Central Asian state.
