France and Croatia leap to top of Euro 2012 qualifying groups

France scored two late goals to beat Romania 2-0 while Niko Kranjkar scored both for Croatia in a 2-1 win at Israel in Euro 2012 qualifiers on Saturday, dpa reported.

The wins put both sides top of their respective groups and were the first defeats in qualifying for both Romania and Israel after three games.

Substitutes Loic Remy and Yoann Gourcuff struck late to boost Laurent Blanc's side hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012.

The win puts France, whose campaign had started with a home defeat to Belarus, top of Group D on six points, one ahead of Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At the Ramat Gan stadium in Tel Aviv, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Kranjkar converted a 36th-minute penalty and made it two for Croatia five minutes later, with Israel pulling one back nine minutes from time through Itay Shechter.

Croatia now have seven points in Group F, two ahead of Georgia and Greece, with Israel on four.

France were full value for their victory at the Stade de France in St Denis after creating several good chances before scoring.

Remy, a 68th-minute substitute for Matthieu Valbuena, raced clear from a long ball, leaving Romania captain Cristian Chivu in his wake before driving the ball past Costel Postelimon in goal to break the deadlock seven minutes from time.

Gourcuff, on in the 74th minute for Sami Nasri, wrapped it up in stoppage time to ensure a first win by Les Bleus in the Stade de France for almost a year.
