The French and Spanish foreign ministers visited Jordan Monday where they met with King Abdullah, who urged Israel to stop building settlements on Palestinian territory so peace in the Middle East can be achieved, DPA reported.

"Finding a convenient environment for resuming the Palestinian- Israeli negotiations requires the cessation of all unilateral measures, particularly the building of settlements," a royal court statement quoted the monarch as telling French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and his Spanish counterpart Miguel Moratinos.

The two visitors were later due to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who also is in Amman.

Kouchner and Moratinos arrived in the Jordanian capital from Israel, where news reports said Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman advised them to solve Europe's problems before tackling the Middle East's troubles.

Spanish officials said Lieberman has apologized for the remarks being made public.

The palace statement noted that Abdullah stressed the importance of the European role in removing obstacles facing the Israeli- Palestinians direct talks, which were relaunched just last month.

The talks are already faltering over renewed Israeli settlement construction and Abbas' refusal to continue discussions while the building in the West Bank is ongoing.
