Twelve students from a school in Japan were unaccounted for after a building collapsed when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch on Tuesday in New Zealand, news reports said.

Seven more pupils and one teacher of the group from Toyama College of Foreign Languages in Toyama, central Japan, were still trapped in the building but alive, the Jiji Press reported citing city officials, DPA reported.

Two pupils and one other teacher had been rescued, the agency said.

When the earthquake struck, the students and teachers were eating lunch in a cafeteria, a school official told a news conference in Japan.
