Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) won Sunday's presidential election in Mexico with 42 per cent of the vote, according to an exit poll made public immediately after the end of voting by Milenio Television.

An exit poll by TV Azteca also predicted a win by the centrist opposition candidate with 39 to 42.7 per cent of the votes, dpa reported. Both exit polls put centre-left candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador second with Milenio Television predicting he had received 31 per cent of the vote and TV Azteca 34.4 per cent at best.

Ruling party candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota got 23 per cent of the votes, according to Milenio, and at best 25.7 per cent, according to TV Azteca.

There is no second round of voting in Mexico. If final official results confirm those of the exit polls, the PRI, which ruled Mexico uninterruptedly for 71 years until 2000, is set to return to power on December 1.
