France, Strasburg /corr. Trend A.Maharramli / Due to differences on environmental protection, the European Commission has tried to prevent the highway from being constructed in Poland. To prevent the construction work being re-established on 1 August, an appeal was made to the court of the European Commission on 30 July.
Through the project of la Via Baltica, it is planned to connect Poland to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, by intercepting other Baltic countries. The contradiction was caused by a 40 km section of the highway which, by intercepting Rospud Valley, could jeopardize its ecological balance. Rospud Valley which is located in the north-east part of Poland on the border with Lithuania is one of the protection zones housing many rare birds.
The construction work which was stopped (by Brussels) in April due to the nesting period of the birds is now planned to commence in August. "The European Commission has demanded that the court should make a judgment to ensure immunity of the territory," said European Commission's Environmental Commissioner, Starves Dimas.
Suggesting mutual measures of compensation of the inflicted damage, the Government of Poland testifies that it will act within the requirements for the environmental protection. The Government of Lithuania supports the project which will connect Baltic countries with other EU States.
