Turkey's Foreign Minister Ali Babacan stressed the need for the international community to secure peace in the Gaza Strip at a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in Turkey.

The Israeli Air Force bombed the Gaza Strip on Dec. 27.

When a 6-month ceasefire with Israel expired on Dec. 19, Hamas fired shells at Sderot and Ashkelon after four Palestinians were murdered. BBC reports that the Israeli military offensive has killed 500 and injured over 2,700 people.

The Israeli army launched a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip on Jan. 3. Babacan said the international community's wait-and-see attitude is unacceptable, adding that a comprehensive peace plan must be reached to secure stability in the region. He said they have been working on various proposals to achieve peace and will continue their efforts. He noted a need for a joint action in this regard.
