Two Syrian citizens were killed and 11 people were wounded in shootout on the Turkish-Syrian border between Syrian security forces and opposition members, who attempted to flee to Turkey on April 9.

With regard to violations of theTurkish borders by the Syrian army, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara will give an appropriate response. Because of the incident on the border Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu cut his visit to China short and returned to Turkey.

Anti-government protests which began in mid-March have persisted in Syria for almost a year. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilian and the security forces.

According to UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 9000. The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes saying they receive assistance from neighbouring countries.
