US Secretary of State John Kerry postponed a trip to the Middle East planned for this week so that he could attend more talks on Syria as conditions on the ground there worsen, dpa reported.
"The bloodshed and the loss of innocent lives has grown worse," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. "The increase of foreign fighters has led to a greater concern about sectarian violence. So we are taking a closer look at what we can continue to do to help the opposition."
Kerry will attend "a wide range of meetings" on continued efforts on how the US can strengthen the opposition's position on the ground while planning a political transition. The only option that would not be considered is "boots on the ground," she said.
The US shares the opposition's deep concerns over the current situation on the ground in Syria especially in light of clashes in the suburbs of Aleppo and preparations for a siege of the city.
