Earthquake jolts southwest of Turkey

An earthquake measuring four on the Richter scale occurred in Bodrum Province in southwestern Turkey, TRT Haber TV channel reported Aug. 15.

The earthquake occurred at 07:00 local time Aug. 15, according Kandilli Observatory of the Bogazici University and the Earthquake Research Institute of Turkey.

No victims or destruction was reported.

The quake caused panic among the local population.

Turkey is located in a seismically active area and earthquakes that lead to loss of human life frequently occur.

The strongest fluctuations in the earth's crust in Turkey were registered in 1999 in the Marmara Sea. At that time the magnitude of the tremors was 7.4 and caused the deaths of about 18,000 people.
