Trend S.Agayeva / The US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Anne Derse, briefed the media on 25 September that Washington is considering information regarding the situation of Azerbaijan's Gabala Radar Station which was collected in the mid September by US experts during a visit to the station.
Experts from Russia, the United States and Azerbaijan studied technical opportunities of the Gabala radar station for its joint use on18 September.
"The USA needs time to fully study the situation of the station," the Ambassador said. According to her, weeks or months may be spent on this. The Ambassador highlighted the successful activity of the experts.
" Russia submitted improved proposals to the USA on the joint use of the station," the Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Araz Azimov, briefed the media last week.
According to the Deputy Minister, they deal with the modernization of the station. "The current situation at the station does not meet the necessary requirements for implementing Russia's proposals," he said.
"Based on recent bilateral discussions on a missile defense system with Russia in Washington and Paris, we believe that there is a possibility to cooperate to prevent existing and growing threats of ballistic missiles," said the Deputy Director of the US Missile Defense Ministry, Brigadier General, Patrick O'Reilly in a briefing as a result of a visit of US, Russian and Azerbaijani experts to Gabala Radar Station in Azerbaijan.
According to him, the visit aims to collect information. The information will be used during the next meeting of US-Russian experts in October.
"Modernizing the station will increase its importance to Azerbaijan," Azimov added. In addition, Azimov highlighted Azerbaijan's concern of possible threats from the station's modernization for Azerbaijan's security. "The key goal is to minimize the threats from modernization of the station for Azerbaijan's security. It has been stipulated in a special article in the agreement between Azerbaijan and Russia," he said.
