European Committee Delegation’s Visit Expected to Prevent Torture in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 8 Dec / Trend , corr. A.Gasimova /A short term visit of representatives of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment of the Council of Europe, a source from the Council of Europe reported to Trend .

In the course of the visit the committee members will visit the places of deprivation of freedom to Azerbaijan - prison, remand prison , isolation cells, police departments and psychiatric hospitals. The basic purpose of visit is the estimation of existing situation and conducting monitoring implementation of recommendations to Azerbaijan, made on the result of the last visit in 2006. The advances, achieved recently in the penitentiary system of Azerbaijan, are also noted

The committee members are expected to meet with Azerbaijani senior officials including justice minister, high ranking representatives of the ministry, prosecutor general, ombudswoman and others.

The committee periodically, once every four years, visits the Council of Europe member-countries, which inked the anti torture Convention.

In addition, the committee also pays sort term visits to the country to investigate the situation and estimate the implementation of recommendations. Similar visits to Azerbaijan were paid on 16 Jan 2004 and from 16 to 20 May 2006.
