Over half of foreigners convicted for drugs in Azerbaijan are Iranian citizens: head of interior ministry's department

Criminal proceedings were instituted against roughly 1,243 people for illegal turnover of drugs in Azerbaijan during 6 months of 2009. Roughly 37 of detained people are foreigners. More than half of detained foreigners are Iranian citizens. 

"Three detained people are under 18, 98 people - 18-25 years old, 206 people - 26-29 years old, 936 people - older than 30 years old. There are 11 workers, 2 employees, 2 transport employees, 1,177 unemployed, 37 foreigners, 11 CIS citizens, 28 women, 1,215 men, 280 of them earlier convicted among detained people," head of the interior ministry's department, mayor-general Hazi Aslanov, said at a meeting of the state commission for combat against drug addiction and illegal turnover of drugs.  

Aslanov said that roughly 37 foreigners were detained and convicted within indicated period during operative-search actions. "There are 20 Iranian citizens, 6 Georgian citizens, 5 Russian citizens and 6 Nigerian citizens among them. Over 215 kilogram of different drugs was withdrawn. This index 100 kilogram more compared to the similar period of 2008," head of the department said. Aslanov said that different plants containing drugs were revealed and liquidated at 358 hectare territory during 6 months of 2009.
