Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.15 / Trend , M.Aliyev /

Roughly 70-80 percent of the Azerbaijani population is displeased with municipality activities, Regional Development Center head in Azerbaijan Chingiz Ismailov said.

The major problem is the lack of cooperation with the local population and the amateurishness of the center's employees, Ismayilov said at a round-table meeting while discussing the results of sociological polls held in the Absheron, Guba and Terter regions.

Ismayilov added that the municipalities need to extend their sources of financing to solve the problem.

Association for Civil Society Development expert Vugar Tofigli said the municipalities share power with the local executive authorities. He added that 62 percent of municipalities do not have an administrative building.

"I think it necessary to expand the legislative authorization and municipality financing," he said.

The poll among 500,000 regional residents was held under the project, "Ten-Year Activities of Municipalities: Problems and Development." The project is implemented by the Regional Development Center.

Municipal elections are scheduled for Dec. 23 in Azerbaijan.
