Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili intends to wait for the official results of the presidential elections in Belarus. Afterwards, he will make an official statement, Manana Manjgaladze, spokesperson for the president, said today at a briefing.

"We are closely following various international organizations and countries' estimates on the elections in Belarus and are studying the situation. Afterwards, the statement will be made," she said.

Manjgaladze stressed that a significant group of Georgian observers is still in Belarus. They monitored the elections within various international organizations. "We intend to familiarize with their report upon returning and then make a statement," she said.

According to the Belarusian media, Mikheil Saakashvili has already congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on his election as president over phone.

The presidential elections in Belarus were held on December 19. According to the preliminary data of the Belarusian Central Election Commission, roughly 79.67 percent of people voted for Lukashenko. The opposition organized an unsanctioned rally in Minsk on Sunday and attempted to seize the Government House. The rally was broken up. Several hundred people, including opposition leaders were detained. The White House said that it does not recognize the legitimacy of the election results published by the Belarusian election committee.
