BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 30. Direct road from Iran to Armenia never existed, VMedia YouTube-channel said in its new video, Trend reports.
The channel made the remark commenting on statements of Iranian officials expressing constant ‘concern’ about the so-called ‘historical border’ between Armenia and Iran, or, as they also call it, ‘a communication route which has existed for thousands of years’.
According to the video, until the middle of the 19th century, when, in compliance with the Turkmanchay Treaty, the resettlement of Armenians began on the lands of the Iravan, Karabakh and Nakhchivan khanates, there was no noticeable Armenian presence and the Armenian statehood in the South Caucasus at all.
Further, neither independent Armenia, which was established in 1918, nor Soviet Armenia had a border with Iran, since it was the border of Iran and the USSR, but despite this, road transport between the USSR and Iran was carried out through the Azerbaijani Astara, and rail transport - through the Azerbaijani Julfa.
Besides, in the Megri section, the railway ran along the Araz river but didn’t cross the border. As for the historical caravan routes, for example, the famous Khudafarin bridges with a truly thousand-year history are also located in Azerbaijan.
“Finally, and most importantly, since 1993, a huge section of the border between Azerbaijan and Iran, more than 100 kilometers, was occupied by Armenia, but then Iran wasn’t particularly worried about this. Does it mean that Iran was satisfied with the absence of a direct land connection between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic? Why is Iran now so worried about the fact that Azerbaijan simply wants to restore the same communications which were before the Karabakh conflict?” VMedia noted.
