German chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her delight in the early hours of Friday about Germany's semi-final berth at the Euro 2008 football tournament, reported dpa.
"A sensational game," said Merkel in Brussels at a European Union summit. "Germany has a reason to be happy and so has the team."
The EU summit denied Merkel watching the game either on TV or in the stadium in Basle, Switzerland, but she was informed about the score via SMS text messages by government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm.
Merkel watched Germany's 1-0 victory over Austria in the Vienna stadium on Monday and could be back there for next week's semi-final and possibly the final if Germany make it.
