Azerbaijan, Baku, 24 July / corr. Trend E.Babayev / The term of secondary education might be extended in Azerbaijan. "Level of education is low in Azerbaijan. I consider that there is a necessity to introduce 12-year secondary education in Azerbaijan," Gultekin Hajiyeva, a member of the Azerbaijani delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), told Trend on 24 July.

The term of secondary education is 11 years in Azerbaijan. A new draft law on Education will be submitted to Milli Majlis (the Azerbaijani Parliament) for discussions at autumn session.

Hajiyeva said that she would raise this issue during discussions of the draft law. "Low level of the Azerbaijani education is indisputable fact. Especially, this is observed in regions. This fact was again proved during final examinations held in schools in 2008. It is barefaced truth," the MP said, necessitating increase of attention and care of education. "Our economic and humanitarian opportunities are fully make it possible. We faced a danger to lose our scientific potential. We, on the contrary, should develop this potential. We should follow experience of leading countries in this field, but not underdeveloped countries. I consider that extension of the term of secondary education will prevent girls' evasion from education, as well," she said.
