Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 December / Trend / The United States intends to negotiate with the Azerbaijan government on the extension of radio broadcasting term in the territory of the country.

Officials of the US department on radio broadcasting will discuss the opportunity to extend or purchase a new license on extension of the broadcasting term of Liberty, Voice of America and BBC radio stations, Terry Davidson, the head of the Public Relations Department of the US embassy in Azerbaijan told Trend on 25 November.

The department officials will visit this week to hold meetings with the Government on extension of the term of license, Davidson said.

Early in November, Nushirevan Maharramli, the chairman of the Azerbaijan National Committee on TV and Radio broadcasting, said that live broadcasting of BBC, Liberty and Voice of America radio stations will be stopped till the end of 2008. "All foreign radio stations will lose frequencies at which they are broadcasting for Azerbaijan at the end of 2008. The foreign radio stations will be able to broadcast through satellite, Internet and cable network", Maharramli said.

The national committee on TV and radio broadcasting considers that the decision on the discontinuance of foreign radio stations broadcasting is politicized.

"Unfortunately, some organizations are politicizing the Committee's decision on the discontinuance of foreign radio stations' broadcasting. The decision has legal grounds," the chairman of the Azerbaijan committee on television and radio broadcasting, Maharramli, told to Trend .

Many international organizations such as the OSCE, the Council of Europe and others criticized the possible closure of radio stations in the Azerbaijan territory and applied to the governing body of the country not to close radio stations.
