BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. Azerbaijan is ready to submit its Biennial Transparency Report (BTR), said COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev, Trend reports.
Speaking at the event, Babayev emphasized that climate adaptation had not received as much attention as mitigation in past efforts.
"Azerbaijan understands the need for adaptation, as our region faces challenges such as glacial melt and the depletion of freshwater resources in the Caucasus. National adaptation strategies must prioritize the exchange of best practices, technology transfer, and mutual support. By 2025, we aim to implement these strategies to make real progress by 2030," Babayev said.
The COP29 President also stressed the importance of public funding in driving meaningful adaptation efforts.
"This is our last chance to significantly increase funding, surpassing the initial goal set for 2024. Adaptation funding must play a central role. Transparency should be at the heart of everything we do. Azerbaijan is already ready to present its biennial transparency report, and we appreciate the efforts of all those working towards this goal," he added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan. Within COP29, the highest-level event - the summit of world leaders on climate action - will be held on November 12–13.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
