Date of Beginning Construction of Georgian Section of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Defined

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend I.Khalilova / The Transport Minister of Azerbaijan, Ziya Mammadov, said on 27 September that the construction of the Georgian section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will begin in the first half of November.

Earlier, Georgian experts announced that the construction would begin at the end of October.

A tender has been announced on the Turkish section of the railway and the contractor will be selected in the near future.

"Later the Turkish side will also begin preparing for the practical work. Now it is possible to say that the work on the projection has been completed," the Minster said.

The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan plans to transfer $200mln to Georgia for the construction of the railway.

According to Mammadov, more than $280mln has been allocated for the Marabda-Kars Railway LLC.

"The remaining funds on the project will be allocated after the winner of the bid is announced. The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan has already transferred $50mln as the first tranche to Georgia for the construction of the railway and these funds are enough for this year," the Transport Minister said.

The Turkish company, Yuksel Domonik completed its preparations of technical documents, including its feasibility study in June.
