The Turkmen Open Joint Stock Company (OJSC) Abadan Khaly plans to conclude a contract with the private local enterprise Aga Gurlushyk at the expense of its own funds and credit, the Turkmen government informed.

According to the report, the contract will be awarded for the design and construction of the Abadan carpet factory in the Akhal velayat (region) on a total area of 14.5 hectares as well as for landscaping the adjacent territory and equipping the new plant for the production of 800,000 square metres of carpets annually.

The document provides for the start of construction in June 2013 and commissioning the complex in November 2015.

The Turkmenkhaly Public Joint-Stock Corporation is a main supplier of famous Turkmen pure wool hand-tufted carpet production to the world market.

Turkmenkhaly includes 10 artistic carpet weaving enterprises with more than 100 carpet sites and shops located throughout the country. Artistic carpet weaving enterprises employ more than 10,000 weavers.

The corporation's carpet factories mainly produce classic Turkmen carpets, along with ornamental, plot carpets, rugs portraits and souvenir products.

Turkmen carpet belongs to the category of antiques for its technique and aesthetic content. One of the main advantages of this carpet is its high density, constituting 200,000 to 400,000 knots per square metre or more. The carpet's pattern is very clear and expressive due to the high density.

According to local ethnographers, the demand for Turkmen carpets in the European capitals outstripped the supply several times by the beginning of the twentieth century. Carpets become a truly global commodity deservedly recognised as works of folk arts and crafts.
