Azerbaijan plans to start producing greenhouse bananas in the coming years, the Director of the Agrarian Research Center under the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Parviz Hajiyev told Trend on Oct. 19.

There is a fairly large demand for bananas in the Azerbaijani consumer market at almost any time of the year, the director noted.

"A couple of years ago, Azerbaijani specialists tried to start production of this type of agricultural products. Unfortunately, the experiment on the production of bananas in Azerbaijan's subtropical zone did not end in success. We tried to grow bananas in open fields in Lankaran and Astara districts, but did not achieve the desired results, the bananas turned out to be short and not in accordance with the expected standards and quality," Hajiyev said.

"We do not abandon the idea of localizing banana production, so we plan to grow this exotic fruit in greenhouses. Considering that a normal level of humidity and temperature conditions are necessary for the normal production of bananas (to ensure access to heat and moisture at the same time), this time there is a high probability that we will be able to achieve the desired results," he added.

Hajiyev mentioned that bananas grown earlier in Azerbaijan's subtropical districts Lankaran and Astara were sold in their local consumer market.

Presently, Azerbaijan imports bananas from Ecuador and Turkey.
