Iran increases rice production

TEHRAN, Iran, August 18. Iran's rice production is increasing by 30 percent in the current Iranian year (started March 21,2022) reaching more than 2.2 million tons, said the secretary of Iran Rice Association Jamil Alizadeh Shayegh, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Recent rainfalls in the north of Iran and an increase in production price have encouraged farmers to double cropping and rice production is expected to increase, he said.

Iran's major rice-producing areas are the northern provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan in 500,000 hectares area.

According to the official, Mazandaran and Gilan Provinces have started the second rice harvest that will increase rice supply and reduce prices.

The price of Iranian rice in retail stores is ranging from 640,000 rials (about $15) to 860,000 rials (about $20) while the price of imported Indian rice is 300,000 rials (about $7) to 370,000 rials (about $8.8).
