Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / The Agriculture Ministry of Azerbaijan reported on 8 May that the sown area of cotton in Azerbaijan decreased by 35,000 hectares compared to 2006 which comprised 27,000 hectares.
"The decrease was caused by adverse weather conditions," the ministry stated. The sowing will continue until the end of June.
In 2006, the sown area of cotton in Azerbaijan made up 100,000 hectares and the crop amounted to 130,000 tons.
Cotton is cultivated in 21 regions of Azerbaijan, in the Salyan-Mughan, Karabakh and Shirvan economic regions in particular.
