Azerbaijan, Baku, May 12 / Trend , N.Ismaylova /
Greece wants to become the first European country that will directly import Azerbaijani gas through Turkey, Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said in Baku on May 12.
Currently Greece buys Azerbaijani gas at the optimum market price at which gas is sold in Europe, but we want to become the first country to receive Azerbaijani gas directly," said Varvitsiotis.
Ambassador of Greece in Azerbaijan Eoanis Metaksas said formerly that Greece could buy three billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas per year. "But we understand that Azerbaijan has a lot of options on this issue," said Metaksas.
Currently, Athens buys natural gas from Russia and Turkey. Turkey sells Greece the "blue fuel" which Ankara buys from Azerbaijan. Because of the lack of Azerbaijan's transit agreement with Turkey and the intergovernmental agreement with Greece, Azerbaijani gas can not be directly exported to Greece.
