At the 27th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Organization of the Islamic Conference on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), it was decided to elect Azerbaijan as a coordinator of Islamic countries in the field of alternative energy sources, the Ministry of Communications & Information Technologies of Azerbaijan said. Azerbaijani communications minister represented the country at the meeting.
This was possible taking into account the work carried out by Azerbaijan over recent years.
At present, Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the development of alternative and renewable sources of energy. Last year the country created an Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Resources under the Ministry of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan.
This year, the country plans to begin construction of small hydropower stations in remote mountain areas of the country. Considerable attention is paid to the development of the country's use of wind energy. Already work begun on the construction of wind park to generate electricity in Khizi region of Azerbaijan. Foreign companies display great interest to projects on development of alternative energy sources in Azerbaijan.
