Kazakhstan plans to create the Kazakh Smart Power System by 2030, the Chairman of the Board of JSC Samruk-Energo Almasadam Satkaliyev said, speaking at a conference on 'Access to energy: on the path to progress'.
"Samruk-Energo considers it necessary to establish the Kazakh Smart Power System by 2030," he said.
According to him, the transition to smart power systems is one of the major development trends in today's global electric power industry.
"The characteristic features of such systems are flexibility, control, automation, minimization of the human factor and the presence of accumulating stations," the head of the company added.
According to him, the use of a smart power system will give Kazakhstan an opportunity to painlessly integrate renewable energy sources (RES).
It can be done through the construction of combined power plants, for example the RES with hydro accumulation station, Satkaliyev said.
According to company's head, active consumers as opposed to the traditional passive ones will become one of the key components of the smart power systems.
"For example, electric cars not only consume energy from the power system but also give electricity to it. When you do not use your electric car, it, being connected to the power system, will automatically sell electricity at peak hours, and buy - when demand is reduced, thereby participating in covering peak hours loads. Alongside with this, the electric car earns money for its owner, thanks to the difference in prices for peak and base hours' electricity," he said.
Satkaliyev said electric cars today are a rarity, but the growth in their number is undeniable.
It was previously reported that Kazakhstan plans to increase its share of renewable energy to 10 per cent by 2030.
