BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug.21
By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:
Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority has extended the period of buying sport natural gas by private companies from through pipelines from one to three years, Trend reports with reference to Turkish media.
The new rule will firstly apply to the natural gas imported from Azerbaijan. In this context, applications will be received for Turkgozu, TANAP Seyitgazi and TANAP Thrace entry points, where Azerbaijani gas enters into Turkey’s national grid.
The decision was taken as part of the energy strategy that Turkey will follow once its long-term natural gas purchase contracts expire. That will ensure Turkey's supply security, will facilitate the planning of Turkey's medium-term spot natural gas imports, and bring about a more predictable import portfolio.
Turkey imports natural gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz 2 via the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), the longest section of the Southern Gas Corridor. TANAP has already reached its full capacity of 6 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Turkey’s contract with Azerbaijan on purchasing 6 billion cubic meters of gas per annum from Shah Deniz 1 expired in mid-April 2021 and no new agreement has been signed so far.
