Iran’s South Pars Gas Company to boost production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 10

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran's South Pars Gas Company (SPGC) is implementing several plans in order to increase production, Deputy Director of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), Farrokh Alikhani said, Trend reports citing Pars Oil and Gas Company’s website.

According to him, the fully launch of the plant for refining of rich gas extracted from the 14th phase of the Iran-Qatar joint South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) by December 21, 2021 is the main priority of the NIOC. So, the gas sweetening unit of this plant has already been launched.

Reportedly, as this gas refinery is not currently operating, 56 million cubic meters of gas extracted from the 14th phase of the South Pars gas field is transported daily to the 9th, 10th and 11th refineries of the SPGC. More than 36 billion cubic meters of gas have been extracted from the 14th phase of the South Pars gas field from March 21, 2018 to September 20, 2021. At present, a $5.2 billion project is underway to develop this phase.

The deputy director also added that the volume of gas condensate transported from the SPGC to Iran's Persian Gulf Star Oil Company will be reached 450,000 barrels daily. At present, about 400,000 barrels of gas condensate are transported daily to the Persian Gulf Star Oil Company.

“In addition, a mercaptan unit is being built at the 2nd gas refinery of the SPGC. The unit will be able to sweeten 80,000 barrels of gas daily. Thus, all this will result in an increase in the quality of production and revenues of the SPGC,” Alikhani noted.

As reported, Iran's South Pars Gas Company has 12 refineries. The company can supply about 700 million cubic meters of gas consumption in the country.

Reportedly, the goal of developing the 14th phase of Iran's South Pars gas field is to extract and produce 56.6 million cubic meters of rich gas, 75,000 barrels of gas condensate, 400 tons of sulfur per day, and 1 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 1 million tons of ethane per year.

The South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran's share in the field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate. Iran has so far spent $90 billion on projects of the South Pars gas field.

The phases of the South Pars gas field are located in an area of 3.7 km. Iran has extracted more than 1.8 trillion cubic meters of gas and 2.2 billion barrels of gas condensate worth $335 billion by the end of last Iranian year (March 20, 2021).

Reportedly, Iran is to spend $25-$30 billion to maintain extraction from the South Pars gas field. Iran extracts daily 700 million cubic meters of gas from this field.
