BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept.4. bp has recently entered the next stage of development of the Shafag (Sunrise) project which aims to build a 240-megawatt solar power plant in the liberated Jabrayil region, Azerbaijan, the company told Trend.
“We are working to achieve an effective technical and commercial solution to the project implementation through piloting a commercial structure called a ‘Virtual Power Transfer Arrangement’,” said the company.
bp believes that this will enable the project to produce solar power in the Jabrayil district and sell it in another part of the country to either public or private off-takers.
“We believe this new approach will lead to decarbonization of oil and gas operations including ours,” the company said.
The Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan and bp signed an executive agreement on cooperation in the field of evaluation and implementation of a 240 MW solar power plant construction project in the Zangilan-Jabrayil zone in June 2022.
This document was signed as part of a strategic decision related to the creation of a green energy zone in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan [from Armenian occupation after the Second Karabakh War] and the development of the renewable energy sector, as well as commitments to reduce carbon emissions by 35 percent by 2030, along with the implementation of bp's strategy to become a zero-emission company by 2050.
