BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 27. Kazatomprom JSC, Kazakhstan's national operator for the import and export of uranium and other rare materials, eyes to construct a sulfuric acid plant in the Turkestan region, Akim (Governor) of the region Darhan Satybaldy said at a briefing, Trend reports.
"The Kazatomprom national company plans to build a sulfuric acid plant in the Sozak district in accordance with the demands of uranium mining companies. The investment cost of the project is 100 billion tenge ($221.1 million)," he said.
Satybaldy noted that this project will also support the creation of 250 new job places.
The plans for the construction of the sulfuric acid plant were announced by Kazatomprom in October 2022.
Earlier this year, Yerzhan Mukanov, Kazatomprom Chairman of Board, announced that the construction of this plant is set to be completed by the end of 2025.
Mukanov noted that the plant will produce 800,000 tons of sulfuric acid annually at the top output level, which is expected to be reached sometime in 2026.
Kazatomprom is one of the leading global companies operating in the sector of nuclear energy and uranium mining. The company enjoys a 24 percent share in the global production of uranium and employs around 20,000 people, which makes it one of the top companies in Kazakhstan, in terms of strategic importance.
