BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 7. Bakyt Torobaev, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, emphasized the need for strict control over electricity consumption due to the decrease in water levels in the Toktogul dam, Trend reports.
He made the remark during a meeting of the Republican Headquarters for the preparation of the economy and population for the autumn-winter period of 2023 and 2024.
The discussion included the issue of the decreasing water volume in the Toktogul dam, revealing that by October 1, 2023, it was initially planned to accumulate 14.34 billion cubic meters of water.
However, due to a low water inflow, the projected volume will only reach 12.4 billion cubic meters, falling short of the initial forecast by 2 billion cubic meters.
In this context, Deputy PM Torobaev instructed the relevant authorities, including the “National Electric Grid” of Kyrgyzstan, to closely monitor electricity consumption limits.
He emphasized the need for everyone, from local governors to heads of government institutions, to economize electricity usage, particularly during the long daylight hours of summer.
Torobaev also highlighted the importance of timely street lighting disconnections on central streets and the necessity to conserve water from the Toktogul even at the present moment.
The Toktogul dam, with a volume of 19.5 billion cubic meters, provides water supply to the Toktogul hydropower plant (HPP).
The Toktogul HPP is an irrigation and energy hydroelectric complex in the Naryn River in the southwest of the country. The HPP along with Kurpasai HPP form the Cascade of Toktogul HPPs.
