Turkmenistan begins nominating candidates for parliamentary elections

The process of nominating candidates for deputy elections in the national parliament to replace retired MPs began in Turkmenistan on April 18, the Turkmen Central Commission for Elections and Referendums said today.

According to the Mejlis's decision, the elections are scheduled for June 2. The socio-political campaign will be held in constituencies No 7 in Ashgabat, No 25 in Akhal region, No 83 and No 89 in Lebap region, No 103 in the Mary region.

According to the Central Election Commission, the precinct election commissions will work on that day from 7:00 to 19:00. The samples of necessary documents for the nomination of candidates were approved at a recent meeting of the CEC.

The term of an MP is five years.

According to the Constitution of the country, members of the fourth convocation are completing their work this year.

According to the Turkmen constitution, parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution of Turkmenistan, examines the state budget for approval and addresses questions on holding referendums.

It also announces presidential and parliamentary elections, considers issues on the appointment and dismissal of the chief of Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice. It also ratifies and terminates international treaties and addresses issues on change of state borders and the administrative and territorial division of Turkmenistan.
